FAQs

What if I'm not sure what instrument I want to learn?

Send me a message and we can talk options.  If you are still not sure, book in a time and I can show you in person the flute, clarinet, saxophone and piano.

How much does a lesson cost?

In general, an individual 30 minute lesson starts at $30.  More more times and prices, please check out the prices tab.

Do you teach from home?

Yes!  I have a well-stocked section in our family home devoted to music.  There is more than enough room for one teacher and two students to comfortably stand or sit and play.  I have a CASIO Celviano AP-460 digital piano with weighted action, multiple music stands, and access to a large table in the same room for theory.  All of your musical needs for the lesson will be met within this room.

Can parents sit in on the lesson?

Starting music lessons can be nervous for some, and if you would like your parent/guardian to sit in the room for a couple of weeks with us that is okay.  However, I would ask any other children not be present in the home.  There is a great playground about a two minute walk/drive around the corner at the local school that could cure distractions.

What do I get in a private music lesson?

Each lesson is one-on-one.  Just me and you.  After the initial meeting, I will use my experience to assess what teaching method I should use, which in turn will help me to choose a tutor book for you.  For most beginners, there are not too many specialised books available.  We can always look at a repertoire book that contains a more preferred genre of music (pop, jazz, classical etc).  Throughout the lesson you will receive positive verbal reinforcement and encouraging remarks.  I firmly believe in the power of positivity and will strive to provide this in each lesson.  At the close of the lesson, I will comment on pieces/exercises to work on over the week and briefly talk the practice required.  I will check in on mymusicstaff.com to oversee your logged practice hours.  If for any reason I feel the lesson was not received by the student, I will contact the parent and double check for other factors in life that may be hindering their focus (death in the family, issues at school etc) before commenting.

Do I have to bring my own instrument?

Yes - unless it is a piano!  If you are having a lesson on a recorder, they are nice and cheap to buy!  Most retailers will sell a student Yamaha model for around $15.  For flute/clarinet/saxophone I would recommend hiring from ABI Music in Glenfield on the North Shore.  They offer very competitive rates, and servicing is included for the hire year.  If you are looking to buy a flute/clarinet/saxophone, please have a chat to Emma first!  If you are a piano student, I would recommend a digital piano.  The CASIO Privia PX-160 is an affordable, weighted-action keyboard.  Why digital? Zero maintenance and easy to maneuver on your own.  They also are easy to house as they are considerably smaller than an acoustic piano.  And finally, you can use headphones!
